✅ Know Your Terms: Some cultures simply won’t consider the idea of non-being, Sorenson said. ” Ultimately, he said, Isaac Newton decided to solve the problem by filling space in with aether. A substance, Sorenson writes, “must be capable of acting on any substance. Isaac Newton, Sorenson notes, pondered whether empty space was a substance or a property. He pairs each concept with a philosopher and/or scientist, though frequently the question they’re pondering is how nothing squares with religious doctrine. Once called “ philosophy’s mad hatter,” Sorenson romps through absolute nothing, scientific nothing, potential nothing, and more. Roy Sorenson, a philosopher who has written about several conceptual conundrums, including thought experiments and paradoxes, wrote an exploration of how great thinkers grappled with nothing in his book Nothing: A Philosophical History. Many of them are conceptual, such as the metaphysical idea of non-being or emptiness or utilitarian, as in “There’s nothing hiding under the bed.” Could all these nothings possibly be the same thing, or is nothing a word we use to describe a lot of different somethings? Some of its descriptors are scientific- zero, the vacuum, the void. Wherever you look, nothing seems to actually be something, so does what we call nothing even actually exist? In fact, Cosmic Inflationary Theory has the entire universe emerging from, essentially, nothing. You need zero as a coherent basis for measurement. But interestingly, “nothing” often turns out to be the source. We think of nothingness as absence, lack, the void.
